Loadshedding Blues? Not with an Eaton UPS

Enter April 2023, it has been a year since President Cyril Ramaphosa called an end to the looming National State of Disaster implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic. South Africans, on the other hand, are facing a disaster of their own as rolling blackouts, commonly known as loadshedding, continue to cripple the country’s economy and quality of life.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it forced non-essential workers to start working from home as level 5 lockdown was implemented on 26 March 2020. As the levels of lockdown decreased periodically, more workers could make their way back to the office, but the hybrid workforce was already in full swing.  More and more organisations realised the cost-saving benefits of having a hybrid workforce, which included saving costs on office space, perishables, electricity, and so much more. Let’s not forget to mention less traffic!

This was the new norm, and workers had adapted accordingly. 2022 however, brought on South Africa’s worst year of loadshedding. According to the widely used loadshedding application, EskomSePush, by 7 December 2022, South Africans had already gone through 930 387 minutes (15 506 hours) of loadshedding for 2022 alone, with November being the worst month totalling 650 hours. Unfortunately, most households cannot afford to install costly inverters or generators that would keep their workstations operational during the sometimes four hour stretches, forcing them back to the office.

Eaton to the rescue

According to Eaton Product Manager for Africa Jaco du Plooy, households looking to only power their critical devices such as desktops, laptops, and a few peripherals during extended stages of loadshedding require a 1 - 3 kVA UPS with one battery pack. This will keep the user operational for about 4 hours, load depending. Eaton offers users a range of battery backup options that are suitable for home office and desktop applications without breaking the bank.

Ellipse PRO UPS

The line interactive Eaton Ellipse PRO UPS provides a 650 – 1600VA power range and features an LCD display to provide users with the relevant UPS status and measurement information. As a Tower UPS with an extra-flat design, this unit is user-friendly for easy installation and can be utilised in a vertical format below a desk or horizontally beneath a monitor – mounted options are also available. With the Ellipse PRO’s EcoControl function, which automatically disables additional equipment when the master device is switched off, users have the capability of saving up to 20% on energy consumption.

5E UPS

The Eaton 5E UPS is slightly bulkier than the Ellipse PRO but is still ideal for a small/ home office environment. Unlike the Ellipse PRO, the 5E does not feature a graphical LCD display and provides a 650 – 2000VA power range as opposed to the 650 – 1600VA provided by the Ellipse.
